BACK FITBack Stabilisation Course- Do you have back pain that disrupts your lifestyle?
- Do you feel good for a while and then suddenly your back "goes out" and you're incapacitated for days or even weeks?
- Does your back feel weak in general and susceptible to trivial incidents?
- Would you like to learn to manage your back more effectively?
Research has shown that functional spinal stability plays an important role in reducing lower back pain and risk of further injury. We at the NWPG have developed a back stabilisation course in response to some of these issues, and to assist people in long term preventative management of low back pain. The Back-Fit fitball course will include a six-week course of graduated exercises to strengthen and regain fitness in the trunk and core muscles of the spine.
Exercises are graduated and are progressed accordingly to challenge the individual. Small class sizes (6 to 8) to enable one on one contact with the physiotherapist ensuring correct techniques are maintained.
Comprehensive course notes outlining basic anatomy, functional spinal stability and photo descriptions of all exercises performed.
Hour long classes to provide a good all round work out.
Height specific Fitballs can be purchased through the clinic at a discounted price: Costs: $260 with own ball, $300 ball provided Level 6, 641 Mt Alexander Rd. Moonee Ponds.
Course dates to be advised

Physiotherapy treatments for low back pain are continually researched; these are some excerpts taken from medical and physiotherapy journals highlighting recent findings in the treatment and long-term management of low back pain. These articles reinforce the use of specific protocols for the retraining of deep spinal muscles (Transverse Abdominis and Lumbar Multifidus) for controlling spinal movement:
"... changes in recruitment of specific deep spinal muscles thought to be responsible for the control of spinal stability have been reported in people with spinal pain. The onset of activity of the deep abdominal muscle, transverse abdominis, is delayed in people with recurrent episodes of low back pain."
"... based on the available evidence, it appears that specific stabilisation exercise reduces pain and disability in chronic but not acute low back pain."
"... specific stabilisation exercise also appears to be helpful for the treatment of cervicogenic headache, neck pain, and pelvic pain, as well as for decreasing recurrence of low back pain after an acute episode."

"The findings of this trial support the view that functional integration of specific exercises directed at the deep abdominal and lumbar multifidus are effective in reducing pain and functional disability in patients with chronically symptomatic spondylolysis (degenerative) or spondylolisthesis (structural weakness)."
"... the results of this study indicate that a ?specific exercise? treatment approach directed at specific muscles is more effective than other conservative treatment approaches commonly used in patients with this condition."
"... mean comparisons revealed that the significant reduction in functional disability in the specific exercise group, after the intervention (core stability retraining), was maintained at the 30 month follow up"

Comments made by previous class attendees:
- "It had a definite impact on my back. I found that when I missed a class I began to feel some pain. The exercises are very helpful and I learned a lot about how to improve my back"
- "Thought I would not be able to cope, but have enjoyed the 6 classes."
- "Extremely beneficial ..."
- "Each and every person was give time ..."
